The manufacturer of Vioxx has voluntarily withdrawn the drug from the U.S. and worldwide market. This withdrawal is due to safety concerns of an increased risk of cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes. Merck released Vioxx in May 1999 and it was instantly hailed as a miracle drug. Vioxx is a painkiller used in the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, painful menstruation (dysmenorrhea), and other types of acute pain. Five years later in September 2004, the miracle drug came crashing down. Although it reduced the risk of stomach problems in patients, it also significantly increased the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Complications begin approximately 18 months after patients start taking Vioxx.
For those that have been taking Vioxx on a long-term basis, this revelation has raised many concerns. The number of people who suffered heart attacks, strokes and blood clots due to Vioxx is estimated to be over 100,000. Lawyers all over America are preparing for an influx of compensation claims and lawsuits, and patients are advised to seek both medical and legal advice with regards to their concerns about Vioxx.
If Vioxx has adversely affected you or someone you loved, you should contact an attorney as soon as possible. An attorney can help you determine if you have a good case and get if filed quickly. A lawyer can help you file your claim and possibly obtain a settlement to keep you from even having to go to court.
